Light2Learn is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that aims to provide sustainable lighting solutions to schools and communities in remote areas to support the educational development of children and adults.
Light2Learn was conceived after the successful expedition to The Gambia in 2014, where solar (PV) lighting was installed in three remote village schools. Formalised in 2016 by a small team, Light2Learn’s mandate is to provide alternative sources of lighting to communal school buildings in rural communities that lack access to a reliable source of electric lighting. The lighting installations will utilise renewable energy sources easily accessible to the local community. It is envisaged that photovoltaic solar energy (PV) will be the primary source used due to its minimum maintenance and wide accessibility.
The objects of Light2Learn are:
The relief of poverty and the improvement of educational development in remote socially and economically disadvantaged communities anywhere in the world through the supply of sustainable solar (PV) energy solutions for lighting and water pumping for schools and communities;
To advance the education of students anywhere in the world by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities [not provided by the local education authority] for education at the school;
To advance the education of the public in subjects relating to solar energy, climate change and the protection, enhancement and rehabilitation of the environment and to promote study and research in such subjects and the disseminated of the results to the public at large.
Tim Harman, the CEO for Light2Learn has been involved in solar related charity projects for the past 5 years. Tim is an Engineer with over 15 years experience in renewable energy; a motivated leader and project manager with over 25 years project implementation experience, most recently as APAC Technical Director for a leading global solar solution provider. Tim has extensive technical knowledge in the solar PV space, including PV project development experience in Asia Pacific (Australia, China, Malaysia, Philippines, Japan) Europe and the Middle East. Experience includes heading up a solar startup business providing renewable energy solutions to commercial, residential and off grid properties in Spain and other locations.
Light2Learn is now a UK registered charity, Light2Learn ltd, Company Number 10656060. The application for charity status in Spain is currently being processed.
All donations received go directly to fund the purchase of materials and associated shipping costs. All project team members are volunteers and self-funding. The expeditions are lead by volunteers who are experts in their fields, including project management, expedition logistics and renewable energy.
It is now well accepted that education is critical to the global goal of building a sustainable future for all. Furthermore, Education is a basic need that forms a foundation in most, if not all development programs, including the UN Millennium Development Goal to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Part of ensuring an equitable and quality education is enabling access to education, and the basic tools necessary to benefit from that education including adequately resourced schools. In many developing areas school buildings exist with none of the basic resources we take for granted in the west, including lighting and water. Lack of adequate lighting in a school is a clear and present barrier that limits the access to education by preventing the use of the building at any times outside of bright sunlight. This limits not only the access to children but also adult education whose free time to learn is after dark.
